Yet again, the time for the biannual Offshore Europe Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition is upon us.
With the global oil and gas sector having experienced significant changes since the last event took place in 2009, when members of the global oil and gas community come together in Aberdeen between the 6th and 8th September, this year’s Offshore Europe promises to provide a number of very important talking points.
As always it will be the Offshore Europe conference that will provide the forum for discussions on the major events and developments taking place in the oil and gas industry. The overall theme of this year’s conference is ‘Securing Safe, Smart, Sustainable Supply’, and it will be chaired by Samir Brikho, chief executive of AMEC plc, who will be joined by distinguished industry figures including Alastair Birnie, chief executive of Subsea UK, Thomas Thune Anderson, non executive director of Petrofac, Mark Corrigan, president – oilfield services, Europe/Caspian & Africa at Schlumberger, and Paul Warwick, president Africa & UK at ConocoPhillips (UK) Ltd.
The conference programme covers the full three days of Offshore Europe and provides a multitude of topics, ideas and panels for all attendees to get involved in free of charge. Following an opening panel session on Tuesday 6th visitors will be able to attend a number of technical sessions covering areas including Environmental, and Advanced Drilling Technology. Reconvening on Wednesday, key specialists will host a further round of technical sessions that include Exploration, Reservoir Management – Physics and Modelling and Field Development, Fixed Facilities and Process Safety, while topics discussed on the final day will include Life of Field Optimisation, FPSOs, Carbon Reduction, Subsea, and Advanced Well Architecture. Included alongside the conferences visitors will be encouraged to attend a range of SPE Training Courses aimed at topics such as Modern Well Design, Introduction to Underbalanced Drilling, Offshore and Onshore Oil Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures and Geological Sequestration of CO2.
Furthermore, with deepwater exploration and production continuing to rise, there will be a brand new area at this year’s Offshore Europe known as ‘The Deep Water Zone’. Dedicated to the technologies and expertise from the deep water E&P industry, this zone will feature key exhibiting companies as well as presentations and displays showcasing the latest technology, projects and innovations in the sector.
Importantly, with much of the current deepwater exploration taking place outside of Europe, Aberdeen will also play host to a ‘Brazil Pavillion’, which will be organised by IBP and feature key manufacturers and suppliers from Brazil’s growing deepwater industry. This pavilion gives an insight into the global nature of Offshore Europe, as this year there will be a separate pavilion section for countries around the world ranging from China, many of the European nations, Greenland, Malaysia, Nigeria and of course the US.
Whilst the conferences offer the chance to engage in discussions and debates about the industry, it is the exhibition section of Offshore Europe that provides visitors the opportunity to get up close and personal with manufacturers, developers, E&P companies and suppliers of the latest equipment and innovations. This prestigious list includes stalls, displays and demonstrations from companies such as AF Decom Offshore (UK), Aggreko UK Ltd, a number of Aker divisions, AMEC, BP Exploration Operating Company Ltd, BPP-TECH, Certex Offshore, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Statoil and many more.
Of course, an event as important as this in the oil and gas calendar is not just about addressing the present, but rather, focused on ensuring a strong future for our industry. Accordingly the 8th of September will see the staging of ‘Energise Your Future’, a series of exhibitions, guided tours and talks with local schools and learning establishments with the key objective of promoting the diversity of oil and gas career opportunities to secure the future of the industry’s workforce.
With it being just a matter of days until Offshore Europe once again opens its doors all signs point to it being the biggest and best event yet. Of course, it will have to go to some lengths to surpass the event in 2009, which was the largest in history playing host to an average daily attendance of more than 48,000 people, as well as over 1400 exhibiting companies from 94 countries worldwide. However, with expectations already high, once again Offshore Europe promises to be the must attend oil and gas industry event, and in our coming issues we will be taking a closer look at the programme as well as speaking with some of our profile companies on their Offshore Europe experiences.
